Some Lanes Reopen Following Explosive Tractor-Trailer Rollover On I-81: PennDOT

Minutes after a passenger car crash on Interstate 81, a tractor-trailer rolled over and erupted in a fiery blaze, on Monday evening, authorities told Daily Voice.

Stop-and-go traffic appears to have caused the crash of one tractor-trailer into a tractor-trailer hauling delivery vans rolled over in the northbound lanes of I-81 near Exit 44 (Plainfield) along Route 465 and Exit 45 (College Street) shortly after 4 p.m., PennDOT spokesperson Fritzi Schreffler told Daily Voice.

The tractor-trailer hauling vans rolled over and the tank exploded, Schreffler said.

Just before 5 p.m., all lanes north and south closed – north because of the fiery crash, and south temporarily because the smoke causing visibility issues, according to Schreffler.

Around 8 p.m. the southbound lanes reopened. The northbound lanes remained shutter as tows and a crane was called to help remove the tractor-trailer that caught fire. 

The roadway is expected to fully reopen by 10 p.m.

PennDOT Cumberland County maintenance crews are on the scene assessing damage to the road and doing clean-up.

Pennsylvania State Police have also had reconstructionists on the scene.

There is no word on any injuries.
